Flying is considered to be one of the safest forms of public transportation. Statistics compiled by the Department of Transportation have concluded that airline travel is almost 30 times safer than driving a car.

But fear has nothing to do with statistics.

And last night, as I boarded my plane in Chicago, on the eve of 9/11, I found myself disabled by fear and surprised by grief … still… all of these years later… as I remembered.
