A is for Abraham

  • 2100 BC – 1450 BC
  • God reveals His plan to restore relationship with humanity
    • Abrahamic promises:
      • Many children: Gen 13:16, 15:5, 22:17, 26:4, 28:14; 32:12
        • Barren women show that God, not man, is the one fulfilling this promise
        • In NT, people of faith are his children (Rom 4:1-25)
      • Great name and a nation: Gen 12:2; 18:8
        • God, not Abram, will make Abram’s name great
      • Father of multitude of nations: Gen17:4-5
      • Land: Gen 12:1, 7; 13:14-17; 15:7, 18-21; 17:8; 24:7; 26:3; 28:13-15; 35:12; 48:4
        • Abraham will not see fulfillment of this promise in his lifetime (Heb 11:9-10)
      • Kings for descendents: Gen 17:6; 35:11
      • God’s presence: Gen 26:3
      • Relationship with God: I will be your God: Gen 17:7-8
      • Bless the nations through Abraham’s seed: Gen 12:3, 22:18
        • Seed is Jesus (Gal 3:16)
        • Nations are Gentiles
  • Though Israel will be enslaved in Egypt, God will deliver them
  • God is the one who carries it out, not people
    • God calls Abraham; not vice versa
    • Barren women having children (Sarah and Rebekah)
    • Second, or weaker, sons chosen to carry out line (Isaac, Jacob)
    • God signs the Abrahamic covenant
      • Covenant carried out through Abraham’s sons (Isaac, Jacob)
      • Unconditional covenant
  • Grace not works
    • Abraham believed God about promises and it was credited to him as righteousness (Gen 15:3)
      • Abraham believes that God will raise up his son
    • Abrahamic covenant came before the covenant of circumcision
    • Ishmael was man’s attempt; Isaac, God’s work
